Gary Chapman

You know the book. Over 30 million people own it, in some 50 languages. But before The 5 Love Languages — before the 80-plus books, before the counseling ministry that spanned generations — Gary Chapman was a ten-year-old boy in North Carolina who sat frozen in a Sunday night service, too embarrassed to walk forward, because everybody already thought he was a Christian.

In this episode of Who Is Jesus To You?, Dr. Chapman tells David Harris Jr. what happened over the next two Sundays — including the week he was sure he'd missed his chance — and the night he “almost ran to the front of the church” and never turned back.

At 17, sensing a call to ministry, he ruled out the mission field for the most honest reason a teenager ever gave: missionaries live in the jungle, and he didn't like snakes. So he boarded a Trailways bus alone to a school he'd only read about in a catalog — Moody Bible Institute in Chicago — in an era when a black-and-white television was still a marvel.

But God kept steering him back toward the nations. A degree in cultural anthropology. Seminary. A PhD pursued specifically so he could train national pastors overseas. And then the door slammed: the mission board turned the Chapmans down over his wife's health, and the couple was left holding years of preparation for a calling they apparently couldn't fulfill. “I don't get it,” he remembers praying. “Why did you lead us to go get this degree — and now we're not going?” He applied to 27 Christian colleges. Not a single opening.

What God did with that closed door is the heart of this conversation. A small Bible college in his home state. A church across town asking him to build a college ministry — Friday night open houses in the Chapman living room, Q&A about anything, for ten years. A counseling office where, question by question and couple by couple, he discovered the thing that would become The 5 Love Languages. He stayed at that one church for fifty years.

And then the moment that makes the whole episode: years later, opening a box of his books freshly translated into another language, he looked over and found his wife crying on the couch. Nothing was wrong. “I just remembered,” she said, “we wanted to be missionaries. And now your books are all over the world.”

Along the way: the summer job on a paper-folding machine that broke him down and taught him John 15:5 for life (“God, I can't even run a dumb folder without you”), his refreshingly honest perspective on miracles and unanswered prayer — including the high school girlfriend he thanks God for not bringing back — and a simple, unhurried walk through what a daily “sit down and listen time” with God actually looks like after seven decades of practice.

Ask him who Jesus is, and the answer is a relationship that “grows and grows and grows” — one conversation, one morning, one yes at a time.
